Nestlé Purina: Real-Time Data for Operational Insight & Odour Control

Nestlé is a long-established company that supplies food, beverages, and pet products to an estimated 95% of households in the nation. It employs approximately 7000 people across 23 sites in the UK and Ireland. Nestlé Purina looks after the pet food range of products. With a company history stretching back nearly two centuries, it is comprised of the companies Spillers, Rolston Purina, and Friskies.

The manufacture of pet food at Nestlé Purina’s Sudbury, Suffolk site has potential implications for the surrounding community, particularly with regard to odour management. As the site is COMAH-designated (Control of Major Accident Hazards), there is an ongoing responsibility to monitor environmental conditions and ensure operations remain within regulatory requirements.

Our Solution

A 10m tilt-over mast was required to provide a secure and sturdy mount for the weather station. Made from steel and then galvanised, the mast is hardy to long-term outdoor use and as such, is a suitable option for mounting weather monitoring equipment at the necessary height to ensure accurate conditions are recorded. The mast is designed so that it can be lowered from vertical to horizontal easily and safely, allowing access to the weather station as and when required.

Nestlé Purina uses Skyview’s precision Multi-Met remote weather monitoring system to capture critical environmental data, including wind speed and direction, temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure. Equipped with a GPRS modem and SIM card, the station can transmit data wirelessly, much like a mobile device. It automatically determines what information to send (such as averages and maximum values) and when to send it. The data is compiled into an email and transmitted via the modem to the Skylink-Pro web server.

Once received, the server decodes the data and updates the internal database. Staff can then access real-time weather insights through a secure Skylink-Pro web interface, accessible via any standard browser. Skyview maintain the weather station with annual calibrations, as well as offering a rescue service.

This installation plays a key role in decision-making, helping Nestlé Purina meet its obligations under COMAH regulations. With reliable and real-time weather data, site staff can make informed decisions, respond quickly to local conditions, and reduce the risk of regulatory non-conformity. The Skyview system provides long-term reliability, ensuring ongoing compliance and peace of mind.
