About DP World London Gateway Port
DP World London Gateway is a leading deep-sea port, located alongside one of Europe’s largest logistics parks, right on the River Thames. As part of the global DP World network, it plays a vital role in UK trade, welcoming the world’s biggest ships and managing the millions of products they carry each year. On-site, advanced cranes are equipped to handle some of the largest container vessels operating globally.
The Challenge
Operating at DP World presents a set of compliance and site safety challenges, particularly when it comes to managing environmental factors such as high winds. Crane operations play a key role in day-to-day activity which includes lifting, moving, and transferring heavy containers between ships, trucks, and storage areas. However, strong winds can cause significant safety hazards such as the risk of containers becoming unstable or even detaching during lifts.
With multiple cranes in motion and critical operations occurring across the site, a reliable, intelligent weather monitoring system delivering real-time weather data on wind speed and direction across different operational zones was essential, not just for crane safety decisions but also to support safe navigation within the harbour. To support this, an alarm system needed to be in place to proactively notify personnel when these heavy wind conditions reached unsafe levels so that operations can be seized temporarily.
Our Solution and Impact
Skyview Systems installed a tailored, weather monitoring solution built around precision, reliability, and accurate data. The installation consisted of a total of four wind speed and direction sensors across key operational zones, which include crane areas, container yards, and light towers with a fifth sensor scheduled for installation. Our Skylink-Pro software receives data from these sensors, giving it access to both historical and current data. Since 2023, our systems have been actively supporting operations across DP World.
Key staff now have the critical information they need to make fast, informed decisions in changing weather conditions with visual alarms and automated email alerts sent directly to any device with an internet connection.
